Cleaning your mattress, you have to pay attention to this!

How much time do you spend cleaning the mattress? Honestly! Our mattress is often forgotten, but with these tips you can make up for it. Your mattress will thank you!

Look at that dog! I want you to be just as satisfied in your bed after reading my bed tips. Relaxed, satisfied and rested. Yes, mattresses are very important for our state of mind and our health, but we often forget to clean this place well. Hence the following tips.

Perspiration in your mattress

Did you know that everyone, young or old, small or large, you name it… everyone perspires on average half a liter of fluid per night. That's about 3 liters per week! And that's only when you're alone. So if you are in bed with two people, you can double it. Just empty a liter bottle of water in your bed, that much moisture has to go somewhere as soon as you get up.

And how about all the dander we leave behind in our bed. Oh dear, oh dear, if you think about all this you will almost sleep in a plastic bag! But, that is not recommended. Don't panic with all those numbers. It's all part of it and if we take the right steps, nothing will happen.

Air, air, air

Step 1 in creating a healthy place to sleep is: airing. I cannot emphasize enough how important fresh air is in a home. Our houses are, and rightly so, well insulated these days. Good for your wallet and for the environment. But a disadvantage of good insulation is that there is not enough fresh air in the house, unless you do something about it yourself. Airing your bed well is very important, because all that moisture that was left in your bed last night, has to get out somehow.

So forget that little voice of your mother, who always called: “Make the bed!” New! You can leave your bed unmade, as long as you open it. So, as soon as you get out of bed in the morning: open that bed, give your pillow(s) a few good whacks, open a door or window and let the bed breathe well. That's the only way for the perspiration to escape.

Old or new mattress

I am regularly asked: “Marja, are the new mattresses the same as the old mattresses or should I treat them differently?” And with new mattress is meant such a memory foam mattress . I recently got a mattress like this… lovely! I sleep like a rose and I don't want anything else anymore. It makes you feel like you're in the 'womb' again. Well, not literally of course, but a little. The advantage is that you no longer move as much (so snorers have less chance of snoring) and it is better for your back.

Another advantage is that such a new mattress already gives perspiration moisture a sufficient chance to escape immediately at night. There are all kinds of ventilation options built into the mattress. So keep that in mind when you buy the mattress. However, if you knock over a glass of water, take immediate action before all that water soaks deep into the mattress. Because of all the compartments, a new mattress holds large amounts and is more difficult to get out.

Mattress protection very important

But other accidents are of course also conceivable. Coffee, tea, glass of milk, blood, sweat and tears. Anything is possible in a bed, because we spend quite a bit of time in it if it's right. What most accidents have in common is that they often stain based on protein. These are best treated with cold water . So if you cause a stain, don't let it soak in, act quickly. This way you prevent worse and you can limit the damage. Whether you have an old or not mattress, the same applies to both. And remember: treat the stain from the outside in!

But why not err on the side of caution? After all, a good mattress is not cheap and you want to keep it good for as long as possible. Therefore, buy a good and good molton that protects your mattress against the worst. Make sure you buy a waterproof one made of cotton, so that you can easily wash it. If you have an accident, the molton will catch this and you only have to throw it in the washing machine. Your mattress will be saved!

Cleaning the mattress and removing odors

But how do you clean that mattress and remove any unpleasant odors? Very easy. This applies to old and new mattresses. Vacuum the surface of your mattress regularly. Place a handy nozzle on your vacuum cleaner and then go layer by layer over the mattress. This removes a lot of dirt already. Do this every week if you do change your bedding. Explore bedsheets online at the lowest prices.

Then I do a more thorough cleaning once every 3 months. I spread crystalline soda over the surface of my mattress. I will withdraw this. You can decide for yourself how long you want to do this. I would say: half an hour to an hour with a new mattress. With an old mattress, it may be a little longer, up to maybe 4 hours. Vacuum up the soda granules with your vacuum cleaner and that's it. Crystal soda absorbs moisture and neutralizes bad odors, so that's two birds with one stone.

Is baking soda also allowed?

Yes, baking soda is also allowed. I mostly just use the old fashioned crystal soda, which I find works best. But a lot of people nowadays also use baking soda. This also neutralizes unpleasant odors, so that is ideal. But I would let it soak in longer with baking soda. Baking soda is simply less powerful in terms of effect. So let that sit a little longer.
