What to Look For While Buying a Wooden Sofa for Your Home?
Among the different types of sofas available, a wooden sofa is usually the best as it would be highly durable. However, it does take a bit of research and care to decide on the perfect sofa for your home.
Here are a few things you need to look for while buying a wooden sofa set online:
Frame
The frame is very important in a sofa as it determines the sturdiness and quality of the furniture. Soft sofa wood frames, such as those made out of Pine wood, may be available at reasonable rates; but it is not advisable to go for these as they may start warping or wobbling after about five years of time. The better option would be to go with a sturdy hardwood frame such as beech, ash, or kiln-dried oak. As far as possible avoid buying sofas that are made using ply wood or particleboards.
The legs of the sofa should ideally be a part of the frame itself. If not, they should be held by the frame through dowels or screws. If it is only glue, such a sofa will be of no use.
Follow these steps to find out if the frame of the wooden sofa set you are buying is sturdy or not:
Lift up one leg of the sofa or a front corner, off the floor
Make sure you raise it up to about six inches
See if the other front leg has risen along
If it has, then the frame is sturdy; else, it is weak.
Frame Joinery
The joints of the frame need by connected using wooden dowels, double wooden dowels, metal screws, brackets or wooden corner blocks. It is fine if nails and staples are used as an extra reinforcement. However, refrain from buying a wooden sofa set online that has been held together solely through nails, staples or glue.
Look for manufacturer information on frame joinery. If not available, ask the salesperson before buying the same.
Springs
Springs are very important when it comes to wooden sofas. You may find many sofas with preassembled units of snaking wire, also known as the serpentine springs. They may support well; but over time these springs may sag or press on the frame, especially if the metal is not heavy enough.
Look for a wooden sofa set online India that is made using eight-way hand-tied springs. If you are buying offline you can fell the springs and make sure they are firm and close together. Avoid going for a sofa that has no springs as it will not provide you the required comfort.
Here is what you need to do if you want to test the springs of a sofa:
Sit down on the corner or the outer edge of the sofa
Find out if there are any creaks or squeaks
If yes, it means the springs are not placed correctly and are hitting the frame.
The Fillings
There are many kinds of cushion fillings. For instance, you can go for Polyurethane foam filling which is easy to care and low-cost too. If you are looking for something that is long-lasting and comfortable you will have to go for High-resilient (HR) foam filling; but this can be slightly expensive. There are cushions that come with Polyester fibre fillings. However, these tend to flatten quickly. There are comfortable goose-and-duck feather fillings; but they tend to clump and need regular fluffing.
It is better to opt for conventional foam fillings that come wrapped in polyester batting. An alternative would be high-resilient foam in a layer of down. Both are reasonably priced and extremely comfortable.
The Textiles
If you are going for a fabric sofa, you will have to look for a fabric that can endure the daily rigours. Linen and cotton sofas are the best; but you need to make sure they are not woven loosely. If you are worried about stains, you can go for synthetic microfiber. Leather sofas are strong but expensive.
It is better to choose a fabric with pattern woven in instead of a printed pattern.
These factors should help you choose a wooden sofa set that will be highly durable; yet comfortable. Make sure you get it customized as per your requirements so that it matches your décor perfectly.
